God’s Word on Abortion

There has been much political debate on the topic of abortion, but all too few--even among pastors and churches--have accurately stated what God, in His Word, says of abortion. In the Bible, God clearly tells us that He creates and gives human life: "For Thou hast possessed my reins: Thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praiseThee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are Thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well." (Psalm 139:13-14); and, "As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all." (Ecclesiastes 11:5). God has also given specific commandments regarding the taking of human life, of which He is the Creator: "Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made He man." (Genesis 9:6); and, "Thou shalt not kill" (Exodus 20:13). God is the Creator and Giver of human life, and this most certainly includes a child’s conception and formation in the womb; and God forbids the taking of a human life, and this too includes the life of a child from conception onward!

Now God, in His Word, also tells of His judgment upon those who murder--and this judgment is the same, whether it be the killing of an adult, a child, or an unborn child. The Bible says of those who murder: "That they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God" (Galatians 5:21); "No murderer hath eternal life abiding in Him" (1 John 3:15); and that "murderers...shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death" (Revelation 21:8). God’s punishment upon the murderer--including those who murder and support the murder of unborn children--is eternal torment in hell! This is God’s judgment, regardless of whether a state permits abortion and regardless of whether a state punishes murderers! No doubt, many will scoff and jeer at these words; but that will not change in the least the truthfulness of these words or the judgment of God upon those who live contrary to them.

Finally, there is one message of God’s Word which is heard even less in the abortion debate than what has just been said, and this is a message of comfort and hope for all of us who have sinned against God’s holy commandments and fear His wrath. God, in His Word, also tells us that He has provided a way of salvation for sinners, that we might not be condemned to eternal suffering in hell, but have forgiveness for our sins and eternal life with Him in heaven. The Bible tells us that: "God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16); that "Christ died for our sins...and...rose again the third day" (1 Corinthians 15:3,4); and that, "In [Him] we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace" (Ephesians 1:7). Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son in human flesh, is the only hope for us sinners! Because of His holy life and innocent sufferings and death in our stead, forgiveness of sins, eternal life, and the needed strength to amend our sinful lives in this world are ours through faith in Him. This Word of God applies to all sinners--murderers included! Turn to Jesus Christ for forgiveness and life eternal; and, in His strength, amend your sinful lives in accord with His Word!
