Witnessing With Christian Tracts

As Christians, our chief purpose here in this world is to glorify God and bear witness to the salvation He has provided for all through the sufferings, death, and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. We are commanded to "go...into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15) and to "teach [disciple] all nations" by going out, baptizing in the name of the Triune God, and teaching all that Christ has commanded us (Matthew 28:18-20). But how can we fulfill this commission and bear witness to Christ, our Savior? The possibilities may be endless, but one way in which any Christian can do this is through the use of Christian tracts.

Before you say, "No, that’s not for me," consider the variety of ways in which Christian tracts can be used. While some may wish to stand on a street corner and pass out tracts to passers by, tracts can be used and distributed in many other ways as well. They can be distributed door-to-door, left at hospitals, nursing homes, medical offices, and places of business, sent in the mail, given to friends and family members, used to lead Bible studies, used as a guide or discussion piece to witness to individuals and groups, and be sent in quantities to churches and missionaries overseas, etc.

Some may have the boldness to stand on a street corner or other public place and pass out tracts. I still remember one old gentleman who, many years ago, stood on the sidewalk at Cal-State-Long Beach, preaching. He held an American Flag in one hand and passed out tracts to students with the other. I don’t know how effective he was, but I admired his boldness in bearing witness to his faith; and, while many laughed and mocked, some read the literature he distributed. Only God knows the results.

Tracts are ideal for those going door-to-door, canvassing a community. They can be given to those you contact, left in the door of those not home, and used as a guide in bearing witness to your faith with those willing to talk with you. Even if you don’t have the boldness to speak with people, you can still hand people a tract and ask them to read it, or leave one in the door.

If this is still too frightening for you, how about taking tracts around to area hospitals, nursing homes, medical offices, and businesses? If you ask for permission to leave a few tracts, you will be surprised at how many places will permit you to do so. In some cases, a small tract rack may be helpful to display your tracts. At other times, just a few left in a waiting room or family room will do. When I travel, I often just leave one or two by a phone, on a bulletin board, or in a driver’s lounge in hopes that someone else may later pick it up and read it. While many tracts may end up in the trash, I have heard favorable comments from some who picked up and read the literature I had left.

Have you ever thought of leading a Bible study or reading to those in the hospital or a nursing home? Christian tracts can provide good material to read, discuss, and share. Again, if you offer to read to patients and residents, you may be surprised at how many are eager to listen.

Tracts are easy to mail, and often a tract may be the easiest way to tell a friend or relative of their sin and their Savior! Individuals and churches can bulk mail tracts to entire communities, but tracts can also be sent along with personal letters, bill payments, and other correspondence. While the personal touch is usually best, you may, without ever knowing, reach a total stranger for Christ simply by including a brief tract in your business mail.

Think of that friend or co-worker that you’ve so wanted to tell about Christ, but never seem to have the opportunity to do so. Why not hand them a tract, ask them to read it, and ask if you could talk to them about it sometime! It may just be the tool that you needed to tell them of Christ and to open up the door for talking further about your faith.

While we are deluged with print and media messages every day, many pastors and missionaries in other parts of the world cry out for good printed materials to distribute. Perhaps you could send quantities of tracts to assist a pastor or missionary in some other part of our country or the world. Good Christian tracts in English and other languages would be welcomed by many.

So, don’t say that you cannot tell others of your Savior! Christian tracts provide you a wide variety of ways to bear witness to your faith. And, no doubt, if you think about it, you can find other unique and personal ways to use tracts in telling others of Christ Jesus.
